Online system for registration of vehicles, related services

In a bid to caution the public visiting the regional transport office (RTO) to obtain licences, register vehicles and other services against falling prey to brokers and middlemen, the RTO has displayed government-prescribed rates for various services.

Regional Transport Officer K. Selvakumar said the rates for learning licence, new driving licence, additional endorsement, public service vehicle badge, heavy goods licence, registration of new vehicles, permit, change of name, address and alterations have been displayed in the office to educate the public and caution them against falling prey to the brokers.

Pointing that the public could get driving licences online as the entire process for applying for licences and related services had been computerised under ‘Vahan Sarathi’ developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), he said the applicants were required to visit the RTO only for taking photographs, online and riding and driving tests.

A year after the introduction of ‘Vahan Sarathi’ in March 2017, the department was all set to introduce ‘Vahan 4’, the online system for registration of vehicles and related services. All those who had applied for registration of vehicles under the existing system should get the registration done by August 14, when it would come to a close, he said.

The new ‘Vahan 4’ online system would be introduced from August 23 after trial run on August 20. The ‘Vahan 4’ would be introduced in the RTO unit office in Paramakudi from August 24.

Kathir Selvam, technical director, NIC, addressed a training programme for the staff about ‘Vahan 4’, the flagship e governance, he said.

Mr. Selvakumar also inaugurated an exhibition of pictures and slogans portrayed inside the compound wall on traffic awareness. More than dozen portraits conveyed the ‘do’s and don’ts’ for road users and public who visited the office, he said.
