Guidelines for vehicle number plates under Central Motor Vehicle Rules 

  •  Vehicles with less than 70cc engine | Number plate with font height of 15mm, width of 2.5mm.
  • Space between each letter and number | At least 2.5mm  500cc vehicles or 3-wheelers | Height must be 35mm, width 7mm 
  • These vehicles should have at least 5mm of space between each letter and number 
  • For vehicles which do not fall into this category, the font height (front and rear) should be 65mm, with width of 10mm, and space of 10mm between each letter and number
  • Number plates should not display symbols, names or stickers 

Recently Mumbai Traffic Police have asked Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to suspend driving licences of motorists who have been previously caught with fancy number plates, warned to rectify them.
