Types of permit and fees for motor vehicles in India

There are two different type of permits available for motor vehicles in India. They are national permit and local permit. The fees levied by the registering authority for different class of vehicles is different.
Local permit fees for different category of vehicles
If the owner of a motor vehicle wants to apply for a local permit, the charges levied for different categories of vehicles is as follows:

National permit fees for different category of vehicles
If the owner of a motor vehicle wants to apply for a national permit, he has to apply for at least 3 states in the country with the exception of Delhi. The charges levied for different categories of vehicles is as follows:

The national permit fees for different states in India varies. In the table mentioned below, the national permit for a few of the states have been provided.

- Temporary Permit will be issued at Rs. 20 per day which is subject to tax paid to Borders.
- The charges levied for authorisation of AITPs for other states with minimum of two states being issued is decided by the states involved at the home state of the applicant or the state border.

- A permit other than a temporary permit or a special permit issued under subsection (8)of section 88 is valid for a period of 5 years.
- The renewal charges for a permit are same as the fee levied for issuance of a new permit.
- For renewal of a permit, the applicant has to submit application (PRA) in addition to the fee required for renewal and other requirements 15 days prior to the expiry of the permit. If the applicant does pay the fee by the due date, the late fee is payable by the applicant for the renewal of permits as follows:
- The charge for the issue of a duplicate renewal permit is half that of the charge of issue of a permit renewal.
Replacement of a vehicle
- The government of India provides the owner of a vehicle with a permit to replace the vehicle with another of the same nature and keep the permi intact.
- A four month period for replacement of the vehicle is provided by the government when the owner of the vehicle gets it registered in replacement mode.
- The four month period starts from the date of deposit of the permit.
- If the four month period expires, the late charges levied on the holder of the permit are as follows:
- For first 30 days after the expiration of four month replacement period, the charges levied stand at Rs.10 per day.
- From 31st to 60th day after the expiration of four month replacement period, the charges levied stand at Rs.20 per day.
- From 61st to 120th day after the expiration of four month replacement period, the charges levied stand at Rs.20 per day.
- From 121st to 180th day after the expiration of four month replacement period, the charges levied stand at Rs.60 per day.
- From 181st day after the expiration of four month replacement period, the charges levied stand at Rs.100 per day.
