Duplicate Registration Certificate (RC) Guide

A Duplicate Registration Certificate (RC) is issued when your original RC is lost, stolen, damaged, or unreadable. The Registration Certificate is an essential document that proves your vehicle's ownership, so replacing it immediately is important to avoid legal issues.

This guide explains when you need a duplicate RC, how to apply for it online or offline, required documents, fees, and the complete step-by-step process for 2025.

What Is a Duplicate Registration Certificate (RC)?

A Duplicate RC is a reissued copy of your original Registration Certificate provided by the RTO (Regional Transport Office).

You can apply for a duplicate RC if the original is:

  • Lost or misplaced
  • Stolen
  • Torn, damaged, or unreadable
  • Destroyed in fire/flood or accidents

The duplicate RC contains the same information as the original RC, including:

  • Vehicle registration number
  • Owner details
  • Chassis & engine number
  • Vehicle class, type, and fuel
  • Registration validity

When Do You Need a Duplicate RC?

You should apply for a duplicate Registration Certificate when:

  • You lose your RC during travel
  • RC is stolen (police FIR mandatory)
  • RC is damaged due to wear and tear
  • Details printed on RC become unreadable
  • RC is burnt, torn, or destroyed

Important: In India, driving without a valid RC is illegal and may lead to penalties.
